HomeServicesDeck & Fence Staining

Bring weathered wood back to life — and keep it that way.

A proper clean, sand and stain revives the color and grain of your deck or fence, then seals it against the moisture, UV and mildew that turn bare wood grey, soft and split.

Left unsealed, outdoor wood doesn't just fade — it drinks up rain, swells, cracks and greys until the boards start to rot and splinter. A quality stain is the cheapest thing you can do to protect a deck or fence that would cost thousands to tear out and rebuild.

Signs your deck or fence is overdue

  • Grey, faded boards — the color has washed out and the wood looks tired and weathered
  • Water soaks straight in — drops no longer bead up; they darken the wood and sink into the grain
  • Splinters & cracking — the surface is rough, checking or pulling apart as it dries out
  • Green or black patches — mildew, algae and moss are taking hold in the damp fibers

What a proper staining job includes

Not a quick coat over dirt. Every job is done in the right order, so the finish bonds to sound wood and actually lasts:

  • Deep-clean to strip dirt, mildew, algae and old flaking finish
  • Brighten and neutralize the wood to even out grey, weathered tone
  • Sand rough grain, splinters and mill glaze for a smooth, open surface
  • Reset popped nails and screws, and flag any soft or rotten boards
  • Mask and protect siding, plantings, hardware and stonework
  • Fill and sand minor gouges so the finish sits flush
  • Apply a penetrating stain that soaks into the grain, not just onto it
  • Back-brush every board so the stain works fully into the wood
  • Seal the surface against water, UV and mildew
  • Fences & verticals: hand-cut posts, caps and pickets for a clean, even finish edge to edge

Staining questions

Good to know

How often should a deck or fence be re-stained?+
Most decks want a fresh coat every 2–3 years and fences every 3–5, depending on sun and rain exposure and the finish used. Horizontal surfaces like deck boards wear fastest. A quick yearly wash keeps the finish going longer — and our Maintenance Plan tracks the timing for you.
Can you save wood that's already grey and weathered?+
Usually, yes. As long as the boards are still sound and not rotted through, a proper clean, brighten and sand pulls out most of the grey and reopens the grain so fresh stain can soak in. We'll tell you honestly if a board is too far gone and better replaced.
Stain or paint — which is better for a deck?+
For decks and fences we almost always recommend stain. It soaks into the wood and protects from within, so it wears evenly and won't peel or blister the way film-forming paint does on a surface that gets walked on and rained on. We match the opacity — from clear to solid — to how much grain you want to see.
Do I need to move furniture and plants first?+
Just point out anything fragile. We mask and cover siding, plantings, hardware and stonework, and move light deck furniture ourselves. For Maintenance Plan members, the yearly wash and re-coat are handled start to finish.
